Objectives
To make HoDs and fee-earning team leaders aware of what work is being taken on in their department / team, to develop supervision and monitoring procedures to remain up to date with what is happening with on-going matters within their remit and to review completed matters – all with a view of not simply implementing excellent standard risk management procedures, but to make fee-earning teams more effective and thus able to offer better client service in a more profitable manner.
Content
- Who is the client? Is he/she/it an appropriate person to take on? ‘No’ is a valid option
- What are the instructions? Do we have the technical expertise and experience to run this matter effectively? ‘No’ is a valid option
- Quantity / Quality / Cost / Time – agreeing the parameters and managing client expectations
- Accurate letters of engagement and compliance with the solicitor’s code of conduct.
- Create the matter team – the right skills at the right level – leverage down to the lowest level of appropriate competence to maximise profit – build in learning and development opportunities
- Plan for and build in management time
- Delegate specific tasks effectively – comprehensive briefing, the creation of milestones and the ongoing monitoring of matter performance both at and between milestones
- Communication with client and team - mistakes happen – silence is unacceptable - ‘if in doubt, spit it out’ – always
- Completion review – always. Learn from mistakes and near misses – ‘never again’
- Make this process a habit - and generate permanent behavioural change in the team
