Objectives
Aim: This 1 day interactive and practical course aims to equip participants prepare for and undertake an effective appraisal and gain maximum benefit from the appraisal discussion.
The course will show participants how to achieve maximum benefit from structured appraisal, how appraisal is an all-year-round activity which benefits both the person conducting the appraisal and the one being appraised. It will provide a wealth of ideas and techniques to assist any manager in getting the most from the appraisal.
Objectives: By the end of the programme, participants will be able to understand the Appraisal Review process, generate positive attitudes to the process from all parties concerned, prepare effectively for the appraisal discussion, list the key interpersonal skills used in conducting a positive, motivational appraisal discussion and detail methods as to how to follow up the discussion effectively.

• What is an appraisal?
• Planning and preparing for the appraisal
• Helping the job holder to prepare
• Conducting the appraisal itself, using the general Appraisal process and documentation
– including
o Review discussion structure - creating an interview plan that ensures a thorough, balanced discussion
o Building rapport - how to build a constructive, positive atmosphere in the interview to ensure a good two-way exchange
o Question techniques - how to construct the right questions to maximise the job holder's involvement and to probe vague and general responses
o Giving feedback - the golden rules for ensuring that feedback is relevant, balanced and constructive.
o Measuring performance against agreed objectives
o Handling performance and conduct problems constructively
o Identifying training and development needs
o Goal setting and setting business related objectives and getting the job holder's agreement to future performance expectations
• Following up the appraisal
• The importance of appraisal documentation and completing it properly
