Objectives
This flagship event is designed to enhance your understanding and skill levels at influence, persuasion, and oral advocacy. You will receive training and individual coaching, before performing advocacy in front of others in a friendly competitive environment. There are few, if any, events for junior lawyers in the UK as rich in learning opportunity is this.
Upon completion of the programme, participants will have increased skills and confidence in formal communication, from the highly prepared and technical to the more spontaneous. Participants will have insight into some of the cognitive processes behind influence, enhancing their ability to be effective in many professional situations, including negotiations.
There will also be networking opportunities at this event.
Content
In a refreshed and redesigned programme, participants will go through the following steps:
- Access short online training on influence and persuasion;
- Access short practical training on Mooting and effective oral advocacy;
- Prepare a Moot as an appeal advocate;
- Practice delivering your Moot presentation in a one-to-one coaching session (online);
- Attend the competitive event at Holiday Inn Reading South, where all participants will perform two contrasting pieces of advocacy, namely;
- Deliver the pre-prepared Moot presentation (practiced in the coaching session);
- Make an emergency interim application at court (prepared and delivered on the day of the competition).
There will be awards and the most effective advocate will be the ‘winner’ of the event.
The amount of time expected for preparation has been cut down from previous years. The amount of feedback and support has been greatly increased. But the event still requires commitment. The indicative preparation time is:
Preparing the moot presentation: 2-3 hours
Watching the online guidance: 90 mins
The event itself is over one day.
Who should attend: Trainee Solicitors
